Do you remember when choosing what to watch on TV consisted solely of flicking between the four different channels that were available?
Me too. Life was simpler back then.
You would choose the least boring option, or if there really wasn’t anything worth giving your attention to, you might put on a VHS tape of Red Dwarf that you recorded off the telly a year ago.
It’s not like that anymore.
We have numerous subscription-based streaming services with mountains of content old and new. Some of the content crosses over, some is unique to one service, some is great for kids and some is better for sports fans.
You can’t sign up for all of them because they cost money, so which streaming service is right for you and your family?
This guide will help you make up your mind.
Netflix
Netflix has cemented its position as the quintessential binge-watching destination. With an ever-expanding library of over 13,000 titles worldwide, including a staggering 3,000 options for UK subscribers, this streaming behemoth offers an abundance of choice.
Netflix’s crown jewel lies in its remarkable lineup of original programming. From gripping dramas like “Stranger Things” and “The Crown” to side-splitting comedies like “Orange Is the New Black” and “Ozark,” Netflix’s originals have garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. Moreover, its original films have even graced the prestigious Academy Awards stage, with titles like “Roma,” “Marriage Story,” and “The Irishman” leaving an indelible mark.
Their extensive catalogue encompasses a broad spectrum of genres, ensuring that every viewer finds something to pique their interest. Whether you’re a movie buff, a TV series enthusiast, or a documentary aficionado, Netflix’s diverse offerings cater to you. There is even a kids version built into the platform, so if your children are still young there is plenty to keep them entertained.
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video has emerged as a formidable contender in the streaming arena, and it comes with loads of additional benefits, such as Prime delivery, music, reading and more. Boasting an impressive library of over 24,000 movies and 2,100 shows, Prime Video offers a wealth of entertainment options.
Like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video has invested heavily in producing high-quality original content. From the critically acclaimed “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “The Boys” to the highly anticipated “Lord of the Rings” series, Prime Video’s original offerings have made headlines worldwide.
One of Prime Video’s standout features is its flexibility. In addition to its subscription model, Prime Video allows users to rent or purchase individual titles, ensuring that even the most niche interests are catered to. Some content is even available for free (with ads).
It’s great for indie films if that’s your thing, and although it does have some kids content, that’s not really its forte. Best for families with teenagers perhaps.
Disney+
Disney+ needs no introduction, offering a treasure trove of content from the iconic Disney universe. With over 7,000 TV episodes and 500 films, including beloved classics and highly anticipated originals from the Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises, Disney+ is a must-have for young families.
It’s a funny one in some ways, because while it is undeniably one of the best services for younger children, it’s also going to appeal to some niche fan bases. From the enchanting tales of Disney princesses to the action-packed adventures of Marvel superheroes, Disney+ has the rights to stories and universes that will entertain all generations of the family.
One of their greatest strengths lies in its exclusive access to highly anticipated original content tied to beloved franchises. Series like “The Mandalorian,” “WandaVision,” and “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” have garnered widespread acclaim, and they are obviously first to get new animated blockbusters.
Apple TV+
Apple TV+ may be a relative newcomer to the streaming world, but it has quickly garnered attention for its commitment to quality over quantity. With an impressive roster of movies starring Hollywood heavyweights like Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Evans, and Samuel L. Jackson, Apple TV+ offers a curated selection of prestige programming tailored for the more discerning viewer.
Apple TV+ has set itself apart by prioritizing cinematic excellence and compelling storytelling. Its offerings, while limited in number, are meticulously crafted, delivering engaging narratives and visually stunning productions that resonate with audiences seeking thought-provoking and immersive entertainment experiences. ‘Masters of the Air’ is a good example of what they are all about – top quality expensive shows.
For Apple enthusiasts, Apple TV+ seamlessly integrates with the company’s ecosystem, providing a cohesive and user-friendly experience across multiple devices. Whether you’re streaming on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, the service ensures a consistent and high-quality viewing experience.
So it’s perfect for Apple users, but it’s for anyone who enjoys a proper cinematic experience. One for the grown ups.
Now TV
Now TV is a streaming service that offers a flexible way to watch a variety of content, including live TV, movies, sports, and entertainment channels. It’s particularly strong in delivering content from Sky, such as Sky Atlantic, Sky Sports, and Sky Cinema, making it a great choice for those who enjoy premium shows, blockbuster movies, and live sports events.
One of its standout features is the ability to purchase passes for specific types of content, allowing users to tailor their viewing experience without being tied to a long-term contract. This flexibility makes Now TV well-suited for viewers who want access to high-quality, premium content on a more casual or short-term basis. It’s ideal for people who prefer the option to dip in and out of different genres or who don’t want to commit to a full subscription service.
Now TV is particularly appealing to sports fans because of its dedicated Sports Pass, which grants access to live streams of Sky Sports channels. This means fans can watch major events like Premier League football, Formula 1 races, cricket, and more without needing a full cable package. The flexibility of the Sports Pass is a major advantage, as it can be purchased for a day, week, or month, making it easy for fans to catch specific events or follow their favourite sports during key seasons. Best for older families then.
Paramount+
Paramount+, formerly known as CBS All Access, hosts popular shows like “NCIS,” “Survivor,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” as well as a vast library of classic TV series and movies.
In addition to its extensive on-demand library, Paramount+ also provides live sports and news coverage, including NFL games, NCAA basketball, and local news broadcasts, making it an attractive option for those seeking a well-rounded viewing experience.
Paramount+ has also invested in producing exclusive original content, such as the highly anticipated revival of “Frasier” and the critically acclaimed series “The Good Fight.” Additionally, the service offers expanded content from popular franchises like “Star Trek” and “Yellowstone,” catering to dedicated fans.
It’s a good all-rounder, but coming from the US with a focus on CBS content it might feel unfamiliar to UK viewers. I have subscribed to binge specific shows then cancelled, so perhaps this is one to sign up for in bursts when they have a few shows you like the look of.
Hulu
Hulu has positioned itself as a one-stop-shop for cord-cutters, offering a combination of on-demand streaming and live TV options. With an extensive library of classic shows, a strong movie selection, and a robust live TV service featuring over 70 channels, Hulu caters to a wide range of viewing preferences.
Hulu has invested heavily in producing exclusive original content, such as the critically acclaimed “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Ramy.” Additionally, the platform has forged strategic partnerships with networks like FX and ABC, ensuring access to popular shows like “Atlanta” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
For those seeking a traditional TV experience, Hulu’s live TV integration offers a seamless transition from cable. With the ability to customize channel lineups and add-ons like premium networks and sports packages, Hulu provides a personalized viewing experience tailored to individual preferences.
It’s sometimes viewed as a poor cousin of the other services on this list, but for people who enjoy long running and classic TV shows it’s a really good affordable option.
Peacock
Peacock, the streaming service from NBCUniversal, has a diverse library of popular shows like “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Saturday Night Live,” as well as a growing lineup of original content. Peacock offers a compelling alternative to traditional cable TV.
One of Peacock’s standout features is its exclusive access to NBC’s popular programming, including live sports like Sunday Night Football and Premier League soccer. This makes it an attractive option for sports fans seeking a comprehensive viewing experience.
Peacock offers flexible subscription options, including an ad-supported tier and an ad-free premium tier, catering to different budgets and viewing preferences. Additionally, the service supports multiple simultaneous streams and offline downloads, ensuring a seamless viewing experience across various devices.
Obviously, fans of American sitcoms and the like will be able to watch all their old favourites here, but while it is one of the cheapest options, it is limited in content with much of it being older.
I quite like it, but i’m old. Maybe that’s its selling point – a streaming service for older people.
