I was checking the downloads on our Sky box the other day and made a surprising discovery. Not the fact that most of them were kids’ TV shows – that was always going to be a given.
No, the thing that stopped and made me think was that there were actually a fair few that I really like.
As all parents know, children’s telly can be a fickle friend for adults. It can distract kids when they’re bored and threatening to kick off, but you can quickly get sick of certain characters and episodes that they inevitably want to watch again and again.
However, there are a few that have really stood the test of time with me. Here, then are five kids’ TV shows I really like.
I adored the original when I was a kid myself and the recent reboot is even better. It has always stayed true to its predecessor but has improved on it too, which is no mean feat.
The Clangers and their friends are lovely characters who teach young children important lessons without ever being patronising. And the icing on the cake is that it’s narrated by one of my heroes, Michael Palin.
I wish this show had been around when I was young. It’s educational, innovative and so funny. The six main stars – who have gone on to create the equally brilliant Yonderland and Ghosts – are all amazingly talented, to the degree that it’s impossible to pick a favourite.
I’ve learned so much from it too and could genuinely watch Horrible Histories all day. The songs, in particular, are very popular in our home at the moment. As far as I’m concerned, Pachacuti is the funniest of the lot.
Teen Titans Go!
The premise behind this show is wonderfully self-deprecating. DC is synonymous with darker, brooding superheroes yet here five of its characters as awkward teenagers. It’s absolutely rammed with references to other things too.
Some are a logical progression – like the Goonies-inspired episode – but there are some more surprising ones including Cyrano de Bergerac. Plus the four-part episode The Night Begins to Shine is a must-watch for anyone who grew up in the 1980s.
This show gets everything spot on. It’s representative, charming, educational, warm and witty. Even though all three of my kids are now beyond the target age group, they’ll all happily watch it now and then and so will I.
There are so many funny little asides, as well as a multitude of quirky supporting characters. It really is a joy to watch.
Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia
This series comes from Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro so I expected good things from it. And it delivers. It has everything – a plot involving a secret world and resulting double life, humour, suspense and an absolutely incredible cast.
What’s more, there are two sister series – 3 Below and Wizards – and they’re all interconnected. And a film out in July too. That’s the binge watch for the summer holidays sorted then!
