How is it almost that time again, eh? We’re hurtling towards the festive season so it’s time for my annual list of presents, or ‘Christmas Gift Guide 2019’ as I like to call it.

This year, I’ve decided to focus on gift ideas for younger members of the family but there’s one extremely handy item for parents on Christmas morning too. Enjoy…

Hape Quadrilla Castle Escape marble run. Christmas Gift Guide 2019

Hape Quadrilla Castle Escape marble run

I loved toys like this one when I was a kid. Okay, okay, I still do. And this one from Hape is so clever. Each of the different coloured blocks has its own function, so there are numerous possible marble run structures that can be made with it.

It’s aimed at children aged four and up and encourages STEM skills. I’m really looking forward to watching my lot play with this set – hopefully, they’ll let me have a go too!

RRP: £74.99

Fantastic Female Adventurers book.

Fantastic Female Adventurers

I chose this with youngest in mind as I want to remind her that there’s plenty more to life than princesses – which she is currently obsessed with. Of course, I’ll be encouraging her brothers to read it too as boys also have a role to play in challenging gender stereotypes.

Fantastic Female Adventurers is a collection of 14 inspiring stories of adventurous women including sailor Ellen MacArthur, champion runner Mira Rai and Britain’s first astronaut Helen Sharman.

RRP: £12.99

Robo-Dash toy. Part of my Christmas Gift Guide 2019.

Robo Dash

The kids have asked for a dog once or twice but I’m not a huge fan. Neither is our cat, for that matter. So here’s a mess-free compromise that I don’t mind introducing to the family. Introducing Robo Dash.

It’s a remote-controlled puppy which follows gesture commands to perform tricks, including chasing its tail. It has two modes: ‘follow me’, where it shadows your movements and ‘manual control’ using the multi-directional remote – which it plays fetch with too!

RRP: £59.99

Baby Shark cuddly toy.

WowWee Baby Shark official song plush doll

Yes, I’m aware that this choice might be a tad divisive, but youngest absolutely loves Baby Shark, so there. In fact, we were singing it at Rhymetime before it was a viral hit. Oh yes.

Squeeze the tummy to hear a slightly abridged – four verses – version of the famous song. It’s a gift that keeps on giving for all the family!

RRP: £14.99

OranguTwang game.

Who doesn’t enjoy a family game on Christmas Day? We love them and this one should definitely help eliminate any post-turkey drowsiness.

Hang fruit and jungle friends on OranguTwang until it becomes too heavy and springs upwards, sending everything flying. We haven’t managed to play it without jumping and laughing yet!

RRP: £19.99

Top Trumps World Football Stars Quiz.

Top Trumps World Football Stars Quiz

My kids love Top Trumps and sometimes like watching football with me, so I’m hoping this piques their interest in the latter. It’s Top Trumps with a twist. As well as featuring some of the world’s best players, it boasts 500 trivia questions about the beautiful game.

I can’t wait to play this with my lot and the presence of so many Tottenham players in the photo above is purely coincidental.

RRP: £9.99
Spy X Micro Gear set.

Spy X Micro Gear

If your children are anything like mine, they enjoy spying on parents and each other – so I’ve gone and enabled them by choosing this set.

It includes a micro spy light – with an ear clip for hands-free eavesdropping – an invisible ink pen with a decoder light to reveal secret messages, a motion alarm and a micro listener. A great introduction to espionage for kids aged six and up!

RRP: £19.99

Smartphone Microscope.

Smartphone Microscope

My kids love using their microscope but, all too often, we’re out and about when they find things they really want a closer look at. Step forward this nifty Smartphone Microscope.

Compatible with most smartphone cameras it clips on and gives 30 x zoom, enabling young explorers to take amazingly detailed photos and videos of their discoveries.

RRP: £9.99

AnySharp 5-in-1 scissors. Christmas Gift Guide 2019.

AnySharp Multi-tool 5-in-1 Scissors

These 5-in-1 scissors are going to be so handy on Christmas Day! It’s inevitable that new toys will need liberating from fiendishly secured plastic ties and tape in their boxes.

They’re made from hardened steel and for both right and left-handers. Other useful features include a nutcracker and bottle opener so they’ll be getting plenty of use from me on 25 December.

RRP: £14.99

This concludes my Christmas Gift Guide 2019 – happy shopping!
