Introducing American Football with NFL Flag and Subway®

It’s always great to see kids getting enthused about a sport. Even more so when it’s relatively new to these shores. I recently witnessed this first hand at the NFL Flag Summer Bowl presented by Subway®.

American Football is growing in popularity in the UK. Indeed, the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium will host a number of games over the next few years. It’s not just at professional level that the game is taking off though.

NFL Flag is a non-contact version of the iconic sport for children aged eight to 11. To give an idea of how it works, it’s similar to touch rugby.

There’s no conventional tackling. Instead, players can regain possession of the ball by grabbing flags attached to opponents’ belts.

The NFL Flag Summer Bowl tournament presented by Subway® was the culmination of a 6-12-week programme. This curriculum teaches the fundamentals and values of the sport, as well as promoting healthy eating.

Subway® has joined forces with NFL Flag to help primary school children and their families stay fit and active.

Over 10,000 children from all over the UK took part this year, with around 1,000 present at this national final.

In addition to playing in the tournament, the kids had the opportunity to participate in a number of related activities and meet six NFL players.

In attendance were Josh Lambo, Kyle Emanuel, Jared Cook, Mack Hollins, Neiko Thorpe and Jurrell Casey.

They were great with the youngsters and offered plenty of advice before the tournament kicked off. They also ‘tackled’ the biggest sub I’ve ever seen!

It was brilliant watching the kids enjoying taking part and, of course, meeting their heroes. I was also pleased to see the teams were mixed.

It was a joyful occasion which is exactly what sport should be all about. I left with a really positive feeling and am pretty sure that my kids will want to take up NFL Flag!

If you think your kids would enjoy American Football, why not ask their school to register an interest in the programme?

They could end up competing in the same event next year, meet some stars. And, best of all, discover a new sport that they love.

Subway® always has family-friendly deals on offer. Check out its latest Kids Pak in stores now and look out for an NFL-themed Kids Pak coming in September!

What I love about NFL Flag, Tom, is the fact boys and girls play together. I hope it’s a success and well done Subway for supporting the game’s move to the UK.
