One frustration many of us have with smartphones is their rather limited battery life. Indeed, 45% of smartphone users in a recent YouGov survey said that longer battery life was their most-wanted feature.
For the record, the next two items on the collective wishlist were shatterproof screens (21%) and water resistance (16%). These findings set the stage nicely for the brand new Energizer Hardcase H550S, which promises to address all three of these issues.
I was surprised when I first heard that Energizer was releasing a range of smartphones but, in hindsight, I shouldn’t have been. It’s a natural progression, after all. The brand is, of course, synonymous with long-lasting power.
Before trying the H550S for myself, I was confident that it would be up to the challenge. Its 4000 mAh battery can last up to 16 days on standby or up to 26 continuous hours of 2G talk time. What’s more, it can cope with up to 15 hours of playing music or eight hours of video.
While I haven’t been able to use it constantly for several hours, I have used it a lot over the last few days and haven’t needed to recharge it. This would be a different story with any other phone I’ve ever owned.
In terms of other tech specs, it runs on Android 7.0, has a 5.5in full HD display and comes with two cameras. The main, rear-facing one is 16MP while the camera at the front is an 8MP one made by SONY.
It can also take two SIM cards or one SIM and one SD. Here’s a picture of Xander with his game face on – more on why shortly – that I took to test the main camera.
The elements that really grabbed my attention though were the protective ones. The Energizer Hardcase H550S boasts a tough, curved Gorilla Glass 3 screen and is both water resistant and dustproof.
Tests have shown that it can be dropped from a height of 1.5m without suffering damage. And, even more impressively, it can be submerged under 1.5m of water for 30 minutes and still work.
I had to put these to the test myself, of course, so recruited a true professional. Xander broke his umbilical cord when he was born and has damaged things on a regular basis ever since! Here’s how the H550S fared.
Knowing Xander’s track record as I do, I was quite nervous about letting him test it when the moment came. He was a little worried too, but was happy enough to go ahead when I said I’d take the blame if things went wrong! We proceeded with the dropping and water tests and it passed both with no signs of damage.
The Energizer Hardcase H550S is a stylish and tough mid-range smartphone and I’m really impressed by it. Indeed, it’s a shame I need to return the one I reviewed. Previous phones haven’t been nearly as robust or Xander proof.
The Energizer Hardcase H550S has an RRP of £399.99 and is available from stockists including Laptops Direct
