I have something of a reputation in my family for being a pudding lover. I say ‘pudding lover’; ‘pudding fiend’ would probably be more apt.
If there are choices, I always want to try a bit of each. There was one incident many years ago in which there were two gateaux left after a big summer party. “I’m not hungry, but I could eat both of them,” I blurted out. My defence is that I didn’t want them to go to waste, but I haven’t been allowed to forget it!
I also worked in the charity sector for six years. Trust me, this is a working environment with a disproportionately large number of employees who buy cake to share on days ending in Y. Not that I’m complaining about that, of course!
Anyway, I believe that these sweet-toothed credentials make me more than suitable for the important job of reviewing such things. The people at Dr. Oetker obviously agree. They sent me some of their new Sticky Toffee Pud in a Mug packs to try out.
Preparing them is a doddle. Pour 60ml of milk into a mug, add the contents of the sachet, stir until smooth and microwave for 50 seconds. It’s as simple as that. There was a lovely smell coming from the mug before I even put it in the microwave so I was looking forward to tucking in.
It was amazing how quickly it rose in the microwave. It looked very appetising too. But, as Bertolt Brecht taught us, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
It delivered on that front as well. The toffee sponge was of a delightful flavour and consistency while the hot toffee sauce at the bottom of the mug was delicious too.
So there you go; a tasty pudding in under a minute. I think I ate it in a similar time too. If these had been around when I was at university – where, incidentally, I learned that Bertolt Brecht fact – I would have lived on them!
They’re ideal for an evening snack or a pick-me-up for the dreaded 3pm slump at work.
Dr. Oetker Sticky Toffee Pud in a Mug is now available in Asda and will be in other supermarkets soon.
