I’ve been part of the Netflix Stream Team for a couple of months, so it’s high time for an update! I had never watched anything on the popular streaming platform until I joined, so was a complete newbie.
I’ve been really impressed with the quality of content we’ve watched so far. Particularly the Netflix Originals shows. Here are some of the things we’ve been watching on Netflix this summer. I’ve included two each for kids and parents.
Beat Bugs
We’re big fans of The Beatles so this was always going to be a hit. Each episode is based on one of the legendary band’s songs and there are several guest appearances by famous artists including Pink, Eddie Vedder and Sia. To get into the spirit of the series, Netflix challenged us to record a rendition of the theme tune.
I can confirm that we won’t be appearing in season two, but some big names will! Keep an eye out for it in November.
Word Party
Amelie loves this one and, although her big brothers won’t admit to it, they do too! This series was made in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company which, in my experience, has always been synonymous with quality.
It features four baby animals who love singing, dancing and learning new words. I like the way they address the children watching at home and ask for their help – it seems to work too as Dylan and Xander answer every question!
Stranger Things
If you grew up in the 1980s and like spotting movie references, Stranger Things is definitely for you. There has been so much buzz about this series since it premiered and it’s easy to see why.
The intrigue is there from the first scene and the series represents Winona Ryder’s first major role in a while. The group of kids at the centre of the story are more than a little reminiscent of The Goonies while there are subtle and not-so-subtle nods to just about every cult film from the 80s. Great stuff!
Orange Is the New Black
Okay, so this is hardly new but I can’t be the only person out there who is new to Netflix and therefore playing catch up! I’d heard all the hype about the popular prison drama and have to admit to being sceptical about whether it would live up to it.
In short, it totally does! I love how much there is going on in it and that we get to see each character’s back story. Despite having so many characters, it never seems to lose pace or direction like some shows do. We’ve almost finished season three and are still really enjoying it.
