Calypso Holiday Hacks – picnic on the beach

A picnic on the beach.

There’s nothing quite like a picnic on a beach to play chicken with the weather! That’s just what we did for our latest Calypso Holiday Hacks activity. Armed with lunch, a picnic blanket and sunscreen we descended on our nearest beach.

Choosing this activity was easy. It’s inexpensive – the only cost involved was the bus fare – it gets the kids out and about and offers the ultimate in fresh air, thanks to the sea. We also live a short distance from Eastbourne and its famous seafront which, obviously, is a key ingredient!

This, of course, is one of the sunny day activities listed in the Holiday Hacks app. The day we chose started brightly, but the clouds started rolling in as we neared our destination. Did it stay dry? Well you’ll just have to watch the following video to find out!

Despite the omnipresent cloud, it stayed warm and dry for the duration of our time on the beach. We also managed to eat our picnic without seagulls attempting to steal any of it and that’s another plus.

Xander was desperately keen to throw stones in the sea. This worked out quite well as it happens as it hurried along the eating side of things as the clouds loomed large.

We played a few other games too. I introduced the boys to walking as close to the water’s edge as possible and running away when the tides washed in. Dylan won by default when Xander deliberately got his shoes wet! We also had a race back up the beach afterwards – anything to capitalise on the fresh air and tire out the boys is good in my book. They slept really well afterwards!

It was also another first for Amelie. I had pushed her along the promenade before, but she had never on the beach itself. She didn’t seem impressed though! Oh well, Dylan and Xander enjoyed themselves and keeping them entertained was the main objective.

The rain finally ripped down during the bus journey home. It’s always pleasing to feel that you’ve taken on the weather and won and this was definitely a victory as well as another successful Holiday Hacks activity.

I’ll be back with another activity soon. In the meantime, check out the Calypso Holiday Hacks app for more ideas.
