Family holiday memories with Yelloh! Village

A vineyard.

The long-awaited return of that yellow thing in the sky has got me looking forward to the best months of the year and, although we probably won’t be able to go anywhere this summer, I can’t help but think about how good it would be to leave this island for a week. Yelloh! Village recently got in touch to ask me to write about my experiences of holidays in Europe – happy to oblige!

I have many happy memories of holidays in France in particular, going right back to when I was in the age bracket that Dylan and Xander are in now. Pretty much every summer, my family would pack the car with all the essentials, take a ferry and drive to a different part of the country, singing along to favourite cassette tapes on the way. As a result, I can’t pass a vineyard or field full of sunflowers without getting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers songs stuck in my head!

We sometimes stayed with French friends or in Gîtes but, more often than not, we went to campsites – which were, in fact, very similar to those that Yelloh! Village has to offer. I always looked forward to exploring new places and joining in with activities on the sites. As well, of course, as to being brave and ordering baguettes at boulangeries and trying French food.

Favourite individual moments include a family friend proving Newton’s theory of gravity to be spot on by falling off a rope swing in the Loire Valley – head teachers really ought to know better! – eating my own bodyweight in crêpes in Brittany and scoring the winner in a kids’ football match on a site in Aquitaine. Looking through old photos, it seems we climbed a few mountains on our trips too!

More recent memories of visits to my favourite country include a couple of trips to the house that my parents now own in the Gironde. The first was to choose wine for our wedding – with so many vineyards around the area, it would have been rude not to – and the second was to celebrate their ruby wedding anniversary.

The latter was Dylan and Xander’s first trip abroad and they seemed to love it as much as we did. They have excellent taste! At only three months of age Amelie has yet to visit but, bearing in mind the name we’ve given her, it won’t be long until she does!

Yelloh! Village has several open-air sites with quality accommodation, organised activities and swimming pools across France, Spain and Portugal.
