The big kick off

A game of table football about to kick off.

Today is something of a landmark day for me; it’s the proper beginning of my new life as a freelance copywriter. Dylan went back to school last week and Xander returned to pre school this morning so I’m finally able to fully concentrate on my work.

It was always going to be a challenge to get much done working from home during the summer holidays and, to be honest, I’ve only really been part-time so far as I’ve been spending time with the family, helping install our new bathroom and attending an international youth football event among other things. To pick up on the last distraction there, the last month or so has been my pre season and today is the big kick off. Let’s hope my start won’t be like the one that my team, Spurs, has made!

I just know that the next few months are going to fly past. In two months’ time, Kate and I will be outnumbered by children. Early next year, we’ll be applying for Xander’s place at school – how did that happen? – and, before we know it, another year will have whizzed past in a haze of sleepless nights, school runs and copy deadlines.

Having half-heartedly tried going freelance once before, I’m going in with my eyes open this time and know that it’s not going to be easy. I know that I won’t necessarily be able to rest on my laurels at weekends and that I’ll have to be prepared to work when the opportunity is there. The flip side is that I’m my own boss now, I get to see my family more and don’t have to experience Southern Rail’s woeful interpretation of a train service every day. I’m definitely better off!

I’ve secured three regular clients so far and have a few other irons in the fire, so that’s not a bad start at all. That said, I’ve got time to accommodate plenty more, so this is where this post becomes an unashamed advert for my services! If you’re looking for someone to write copy for any online or print publication, give me a shout. I’ve got 11 years’ experience under my belt and have written for two leading charities and a quango as well as alongside several well-known brands.

I’ve written magazine features, website content, national poster campaigns, online guides, a book, annual reviews, leaflets, social media content, video scripts and, of course, blogs! Contact me if you’ve got a project that needs some copy – I’ll be happy to help.

Okay, advert over! Hopefully, a year from now I’ll be in the same position and not back in a role that takes me away from my family and destroys my will to live. The irony isn’t lost on me that the first thing I’ve written is a personal post rather than something I’m being paid for!

Cheers Dave! Looking forward to comparing notes on being what I believe the cool kids call a ‘WAHD’!
