Today is the start of a new chapter for me; I’m taking the bold step of going freelance. Yesterday was the last day of my 12-month contract and, although I was offered the opportunity to stay on for another year, I’ve decided that I wanted to take on a new challenge. I’ve left on good terms and it’s nice that I’d obviously done a good enough job for them to want me to stay, but sometimes a change is needed. With our third child due in November too, it seemed a good time to make the leap.
It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly; I spent five months without a job before my most recent role and, without putting too fine a point on it, money got very tight. I’m a strong believer in flexible working hours though and really wanted something that would enable me to spend more time with my growing family, and this is it. I’m going to be writing and editing copy from the comfort of my own home and *whispers* trying to go professional with this here blog too.
I’ve got several irons in the proverbial fire with the freelance writing – a few of which are related to the kind of thing I write about on here – so I’m optimistic that things are going to work out for me and my family.
Similarly, there are some exciting things afoot with this blog. I’ve not had the chance to do as much with it as I would have liked over the last year and feel like I’ve become fairly peripheral on social media. Work has got in the way and I’ve often been too tired as a result. I’m delighted that I’m going to have time again and am looking forward to writing plenty more posts and engaging with people more.
No more train journeys, meetings or work clothes – from now on, I’m my own boss and I can’t wait to get started!
