Review and competition: Corkcicle One

If there’s one kind of product I can be guaranteed to say yes to when friendly PR folk come calling, it’s stuff that has something to do with the consumption of alcohol. I realise this makes me sound like a massive lush, but I’m okay with that as this is cool – quite literally! The Corkcicle One is a nifty gadget for people who like their wine – and we most definitely do in our house. It can be used to chill white wine – hence the name and its icicle-like shape – aerate any bottle of vino and also to aid pouring.

As you can see from the image above, it comes in a tough glass case; all you need to do is place it in the freezer for 90 minutes, remove the Corkcicle and place it in a bottle. It claims to keep your wine chilled for up to 45 minutes and I can certainly vouch for this. It did the job very nicely and though the wine was gone in that amount of time – well, there were four of us drinking! – the bottle was still cold an hour after being removed from the fridge.

I also tried using it with a bottle of red – without having put it in the freezer, of course – and it seemed to get the air to the wine very well. I picked a middle-of-the road shiraz that we often get on the grounds that it’s affordable, and it did taste slightly different – and in a good way too!

The pouring action is good too; I consider myself something of an expert at the pour and twist to stop precious drops of wine ending up on the table – oh, the humanity! – but this makes it much easier. I consider myself a convert and, with Father’s Day just around the corner, recommend it as a suitable gift for your old man. I know my Dad likes it as he and my Mum have already started dropping ‘subtle’ hints about ‘borrowing’ mine. I kid you not.
