Remember the Charley Says safety information films from the late 70s and early 80s? For those who may be just a tad too young – tsk! – you may know it from a song by The Prodigy which sampled it.
Anyway, those who do recall the verbose safety-conscious moggy and his young companion may be interested to know that they’re back – and they don’t seem to have aged at all!
The cartoon duo, originally brought to life by the voice of Kenny Everett, appear in a new ad by national charity, Electrical Safety First. David Walliams provides the voice this time and, though it obviously sounds a little different, the message is the same important one about safety in the home. Apparently, over 350,000 people are injured each year as a result of everyday electricity use, so the importance of getting it across to people is clear.
To demonstrate how easy it is to overload sockets, Electrical Safety First has produced this handy calculator. Give it a go – without wishing to sound too dramatic, it could save your life.
Despite being a little obsessive about switching off plugs when appliances aren’t in use – I’ve got a workplace fire warden qualification and take it very seriously indeed! – I wasn’t sure whether we were overloading any of ours, so it’s worth remembering what Charley says and taking time to make sure.
